Aptitude Test:
There shall be an Aptitude Test devised
and centrally conducted by the University
of Pune for the State of Maharashtra.For
admission to Ph.D. Degree every candidate,
who is otherwise eligible, has to qualify
in the said Aptitude Test.However,the
persons qualified in NET/SET/GATE/JRF
examination of the apex bodies mentioned
above, are exempted from this Aptitude
Test.
Selection and Registration:
Eligible candidates, after applying shall
be screened by a panel and provisional
admission shall be given only after undergoing
centralized interview at the college/institute
university level, as the case may be.
Final registration shall be done in the
University after undergoing further necessary
procedure and that the topic along with
the abstract of research proposal with
details of the student, guide and institute
shall be announced on the web to avoid
duplication. Care shall also be taken
to assess relevance of the topic.
Monitoring the Process:
It would be obligatory for the research
students to submit progress report of
the work at the end of every term, which
shall be assessed by a committee formed
for the purpose.
Appointment of referees shall be made
by the competent authorities preferably
by random selection from pre-existing
pool of names generated for each subject
with various specializations by the Board
of Studies. There shall be three referees
one from with the state, one from outside
the State of Maharashtra and one from
Outside India (Wherever available).
Care shall also be taken to avoid reciprocal
appointment of referees vis-à-vis
the guiding teacher at least for a period
of five years.
Submission of Thesis:
Thesis shall also submitted in the form
of loose papers or preferably in computer
readable form (soft copy) enabling the
candidate to incorporate changes after
updating the data, if suggested by the
referees. In addition to the hard copies,
final approved thesis shall be submitted
in CD or computer readable form and the
University shall make it available on
the web.
Examination:
There shall be viva-voce with open defense
system.
Applicability of the
guidelines:
These guidelines are not applicable to
all those cases registered or to the candidates
whose applications have been accepted
by the IIOD/Director of the University/Institutes/Colleges
before the date on which these guidelines
are adopted. They will be covered by the
earlier rules.
Duration of the
Programme :
A candidate is allowed to submit his thesis
after a minimum of two academic years from
the date of Registration.
The candidate is required
to be a resident of Greater Mumbai for
the duration of the programme.
Fees :
Total Fees: Rs.10,000/- per annum.

Registration for the Ph. D. Programme
:
Candidates are requested to refer to the
University of Mumbai
Circular No.Th./69 of 2001, for registering
themselves under the programme.

Submission
of Thesis :
Two months before submitting the thesis,
the candidate shall forward to the Registrar
through his guide a statement giving the
title and synopsis of the thesis (20 copies
type, written and stapled) along with
a fee of Rs.3,000/-. The thesis has to
be submitted by the candidate through
his guide and the Institute, any time
after two months and before six months
from the date of submission of the synopsis.
Award of degree
of Ph. D. :
Award of the degree will be subjected
to the approval of the thesis for submission
by the guide, the Board of Studies, and
also the examiners through the viva-voce
examination. If in the opinion of the
referee, or any of these approving authorities,
the thesis is deemed not to be worthy
of submission for the Ph. D. degree but
it is adequate for the Master’s
Degree (M. Phil.) then the Master’s
degree (M. Phil.) may be conferred on
the candidate.
